His wife had been the one to handle it, but she had recently died of cancer.He and she had been high school sweethearts -- lovers from their teen years, and the man I was speaking to was now about 74 years old.He sounded heartbroken, and went on to tell me that it was the most painful experience ever to see the love of his life in pain, and suffering, and not only could he do nothing to take her pain away, but he couldn't even hold her hand to remind her he was there, because just touching her hand made her pain worse.So even though he was frustrated and upset he couldn't solve her problem or take away her pain, his love kept him at her side until her last breath.He said that she was his partner, his best friend, and he was like a lost puppy without her.That story reminds me that true love exists, and statistics can't quantify it like they can so much else.
