Apple had a huge lock-in with a large number of people because they had been selling music, movies and tv shows....and Apple isn't in the app business or content business as a core business. Apple is selling iPhones and iPods. 30% of the application revenue doesn't account for much compared to selling the phones themselves. Sometimes, the simplest solution is usually the better solution, even if it isn't perfect. It is funny how scientists can't see the trees through the forest at times....where budget meets feasibility, then we can talk perfection.
